Engineering & Design Honors Program Students Use Skills for Bark in the Park Fundraiser
Beginning last school year and throughout the summer, members of the Academy’s Engineering & Design Honors Program built a doghouse for raffle at the Bark in the Park fundraiser, held on Sunday, August 18.
As part of the St. Joseph Carpenters Academy, a program offering of the Engineering & Design Honors Program, Engineering Teacher and Department Chair Mr. Bryce Ormiston and Engineering & Design Honors Program Coordinator Mr. Robert Zdankiewicz helped students create a concept and determine the required materials.
Student Support Services Member Mrs. Courtney Koz was instrumental in helping secure the materials. She worked with The Home Depot in Rocky River, which generously donated all the materials for the project. Mrs. Koz and Mr. Zdankiewicz accompanied the students to The Home Depot for the material pickup and thanked the manager for her assistance in this project.
To build the doghouse, students learned how to use such tools as a mitre saw, table saw, drill, jig saw, and pneumatic nail gun. In addition, students learned how to read blueprints, measure, cut angles and drill. Gabriella Croce ’25 shared this reflection: “My favorite part about this project was seeing it all come together. From just talking about getting the materials to build the doghouse to seeing the finished product being raffled off. It was amazing to look at it knowing that I helped build it and now someone's dog is going to enjoy it. Everyone that worked on it made it so fun and amazing! I loved talking about the design choices for the doghouse and all the little things we wanted to add to it throughout the build to make it unique.”
