Food Truck Creations Highlight Health Education Learning
Students in Health & Physical Education Teacher Mrs. Christina Actis' class wrapped up their Nutrition Unit by creating nutrient-rich food truck concepts and menu items to share with their fellow classmates.
Students received a small paper food truck to design and develop a menu with food and beverages options. On presentation day, as students shared their food trucks and food items, they described the nutritional value of each item telling if it was a protein, carbohydrate, mineral, fiber, vitamin, etc. Students also shared what inspired their concept, including their family, wanting to share their culture with others and the love of a particular food.
“My favorite part of the food truck project was getting to try all the different foods that my peers made and getting to make the açaí bowls for my truck,” Mary Metallinos ’28 shared. Mary’s food truck was called Bowl de Rio. She made açaí bowls with blueberries, strawberries, bananas, coconut, Nutella drizzle and the option of granola on top.
“I really enjoyed getting to share my mother’s Brazilian background with my classmates and becoming educated on others' family backgrounds. The food was so amazing, and I hope Mrs. Actis continues this for years to come.”
