Why Saint Joseph Academy is the Right Fit

Your daughter’s high school decision is undoubtedly a big one for her and your family. The high school she selects should support her academic journey, help her discover her God-given talents and prepare her for her future.

To help your daughter feel confident in her decision, we’ve put together a list of things to consider.

All-Girls Advantage

The Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) released the results of a study that shows statistically significant advantages for girls’ school graduates as they enter their college/university years. Commissioned by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS), Fostering Academic and Social Engagement: An Investigation into the Effects of All-Girls Education in the Transition to University spans Generations Y and Z, comparing the self-confidence, academic achievement, political engagement and aspirations of girls’ school graduates to their co-educated peers.

The study identified several key areas in which all-girls schools are better preparing their students for success in colleges/universities and beyond. Based on the data, researchers concluded that when compared to their female peers at coed schools, girls’ school graduates:

• Have stronger academic skills
• Are more academically engaged
• Demonstrate higher science self-confidence
• Display higher levels of cultural competency
• Express stronger community involvement
• Exhibit increased political engagement

Average Class Size

When it comes to selecting a school for your daughter to attend, two numbers are vital. One is the average class size (the number of students typically found in an individual class); the second is the student-to-teacher ratio (the number of students compared to the number of teachers). Typically, the lower these numbers, the more positive and engaging your daughter’s experience is likely to be at a school.

Smaller class sizes include more individualized attention from faculty, a stronger sense of community and allow for more opportunities for students to contribute. All of these factors have a positive impact on your daughter’s overall academic experience.

Average class size can be a rule of thumb to help determine if a school is in or out of your daughter’s list. Saint Joseph Academy’s average class size is 18 students per class with a 11:1 student-teacher ratio.

Academic Programming

In addition to understanding the educational philosophies of the schools your daughter is considering, she should also understand the academic programming.

• What are the required courses to graduate?
• What electives are available?
• What is the grading scale?
• Are there any unique classes that can't be found at another school?
• Are there opportunities to do independent research/study?
• Are there unique academic programs to encourage students to pursue an interest at a deeper level?
• Are advanced classes available? Does the school offer honors and AP® classes?
• Is a shadowing program offered for students to delve deeper into career areas of interest before the college selection process begins?

Class Scheduling

There are two often-used strategies when it comes to class scheduling. The first is a traditional schedule in which students attend each of their classes, which is typically seven to eight periods in a day. The second is college-style block scheduling, which typically includes four academic classes and the day of the week each class is attended rotates.

College block scheduling, which Saint Joseph Academy utilizes, has fewer, longer-length classes that enable more interaction between teachers and students, deeper discussions, collaboration on group projects, completing labs, etc. This type of schedule gives students time in the middle of each day for lunch, club meetings, exercising, tutoring, homework, reflection or socializing with friends. Block scheduling also eases the transition from high school to college.

Student-Led Extracurricular Activities and Clubs

Academics are, of course, important, but they aren’t the only consideration worth noting when your daughter is considering high schools. As she evaluates the different extracurricular activities that each school offers, it is important to know what types of special interest clubs, athletics, traditions, service immersion trips, and performing and fine arts are available to help her expand her interests and feel more connected to the school community.

More than 50 student-led activities are offered at the Academy. At Saint Joseph Academy, 32% of students participate in the Performing Arts Program. 55% of the student body participates in one or more sport, proving they are competitive on state and national levels; student-athletes have an average GPA of 3.7. Since most colleges take extracurricular activities into account when they evaluate applicants, involvement helps her chances of being admitted to her first choice college/university.

Deepening Faith Formation

Our Catholic identity and guiding principles of the Congregation of St. Joseph are firmly embedded in every aspect of life at Saint Joseph Academy. At the very heart of the spirituality of our sponsors, the Congregation of St. Joseph, is the theme of unity: working and living to bring all people into union with God, each other and all of creation. This charism is embraced at Saint Joseph Academy, shaping young women into living out unifying love each and every day.

Guiding young women in Catholic faith traditions and Catholic theology is a priority at the Academy. Theology, which is taught throughout students’ four years, is supplemented by daily prayer, a required service program, annual retreats at every grade level, monthly liturgies, prayer services, a student CORE Ministry board and weekly rosary.

Saint Joseph Academy is a welcoming environment where young women experience a faith community and gain clarity of vision for the future so that their lives reflect confidence, dignity and self-worth; compassionate leadership and justice; and the grace of bearers of reconciliation in our world.

As an expression of the charism of the Congregation of St. Joseph, education at Saint Joseph Academy emphasizes the importance of relationships with the dear neighbor. The service component of the curriculum is a way students are encouraged to express God’s love, both within our school community and in the context of the broader world. Students “serve the dear neighbor” locally, regionally and globally by participating in various service immersion trips. Through service, students grow in awareness of themselves and become increasingly connected with all God’s creation.

Four years of spiritual development enable students to embody the qualities of the "Character of a Saint Joseph Graduate." In the tradition of the Congregation of St. Joseph, the graduate of Saint Joseph Academy is a woman who lives Unifying Love through Empathetic Justice, Service to the Dear Neighbor without Distinction, Personal Integrity and Emerging Wisdom.

College Support & Student Outcomes

It’s important to inquire about graduation outcomes.

• What are the college acceptance rates?
• Which colleges and universities often accept graduates from the school that your daughter is considering?
• How much did the graduating class receive in merit scholarships?
• How does the school help students and their families navigate the college selection process?

These questions are important, as individual student outcomes can offer insights into the types of support and success students can expect by attending that school.

Saint Joseph Academy’s School Counselors work with the same students in their Freshman and Sophomore years. As Juniors and Seniors, students work with the same College Counseling Counselors who facilitate and support the transition from high school to post-secondary education. This includes academic advising, as well as guiding and supporting students and families through the college search and application process. Students are viewed as individuals and guided to find a college/university that will provide them with a challenging, comfortable and safe environment.

Every year the College Counseling Department helps coordinate a Junior Professional Shadowing program for the entire class. During this three-day program, each student explores her potential career choice with a professional at a company or organization. The hands-on experience helps each student determine if that career is still of interest (or not) as she starts to narrow her college preferences.

Taking the Next Step

By answering the questions above for each school your daughter is considering, you should be able to help her to evaluate which one would truly be the best fit for her - one where she is able to learn in an environment that fosters a sense of belonging and provides the support that allows her to truly thrive!
